Viscous tuned mass dampers are composed of three parts: a mass system, a spring system and a damping system.
When the viscous tuned mass dampers are installed, the vibration frequencies of the mass systems are adjusted to match those of the structure. As the structure vibrates, the mass systems of the product resonate with the controlled vibration modes of the structure and vibrational energy is dissipated through viscous fluid dampers.
These dampers are primarily employed when the vibrations cannot be dampened by increasing the stiffness of the system or through other direct methods.  They find application in horizontal structures like pedestrian bridges, large cantilevers, and long-span floors, as well as vertical structures such as wind turbines, transmission towers, and television towers. With proper design, tuned mass dampers offer efficient solutions to all these challenges.
